When one asks, “How much does it really cost to make a website in India?” generally the answer would be, “It depends on the type of website you want to create.” Well, I do not disagree with the statement as “yes” the cost banks on the type of website you want to create, your expectations, needs, and desires from the same.

However, the real cost of your website will eventually depend on the selected design, the person you hire for development, the hosting you choose, and many other features.

Even if we cover all the aspects, yet we will just get an idea of an approximate cost required to make a website. To determine a realistic cost is a tenacious task. A lot of elements are considered before determining the real cost.

As already discussed, the overall cost of the website can be estimated by breaking down the cost structure into various elements. Now, some of these elements require a fixed cost that is, the services might be charged annually. Some costs however vary from time to time according to the services.

Here are the major cost consuming factors of website development:

No matter what the type of website is, the first step of creating one remains to buy a domain name. For those of you who do not know, a domain name is the unique URL of your website.

You may pick your domain name from, GoDaddy, BlueHost, HostGator, or a registrar of your choice. Some of these registrars offer other integrated services for managing DNS, hosting, email accounts, and databases. This will approximately cost you around INR 1000-2000/year.

Hosting is basically taking some space on the server to host your web application. It will run your website on the internet. For this, you need to pick a hosting provider like Hostgator, Bluehost, Digital Ocean, etc. A hosting service will rent you some space on a server where you can store files and necessary data.

These hosting services may charge monthly or annually depending completely on the type of package or service you opt.

  • Shared hosting: This type of hosting is good for small websites and blogs which do not need large spaces to store the data. It costs around INR 4000- 10,000/year.
  • Virtual Private Hosting (VPS): These hosting services are generally opted by big business brands or professionals. The services provide better performance and server control. It costs around INR 50,000-1,00,000/year.
  • Dedicated Servers: If your website draws huge traffic or custom applications, it will be more convenient for you to use a dedicated server. These services cost a lot and should only be used by big enterprises and professionals. A dedicated server costs around INR 1,75,000-2,00,000/year.

Once, you have completed the first two steps of website development, the next step is to design your website. This is the most crucial and costly part of website development. You can hire a design team to design your website. You may choose a website design suggested by them or may get an exclusive design created for your website.

The design completely depends on the type of website you are creating, the kind of services you want to provide, your needs and ideas. If you want a more business/ professional type of design, it might cost you more.

Although designing cost is a one-time investment, however, you’ll have to make certain changes from time to time. The cost of design will vary from Rs 5000 for a small website to more than Rs 50,000 for professional design websites like an e-commerce website.

You may also opt for additional and optional features like CMS, SEO, social media setup, email services, and many more. All these features charge additionally for their services. Such features enhance the functionality and make your website more user-friendly.

  1. Portfolio/ Blogs/ One-page websites cost somewhere around Rs 2000- Rs 15000/year according to your chosen plan.
  2. E-commerce websites may cost around Rs 1,00,000- Rs 20,00,000/year depending upon the number of web pages and services.

Different types of websites cost you differently. Some websites may price low while some websites might charge very huge amounts. Again it all depends on the user’s requirements. People having small businesses, blogs, or start-ups can create their own websites just the way they want. You can create a simple static website to a high-quality features website, the decision is yours to make.
